Early Life and Education
Building the Foundation for Legal Excellence Through History and Service
Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Albert G. “Treb” Courie III developed his passion for history and justice through the stories of his grandfather’s World War II service and his own exploration of military history through countless war movies. His academic journey began at Clemson University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History, developing the analytical skills and deep understanding of military culture that would prove invaluable throughout his legal career. His historical education provided him with crucial context for understanding the evolution of military law and the importance of maintaining strong legal protections for service members.
His legal education at Duke University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina, opened his eyes to the expansive nature of law beyond just criminal practice, teaching him that effective advocacy requires understanding commercial law, tax law, and numerous other legal disciplines that can impact military cases. The comprehensive legal education at Duke, combined with his year-long federal clerkship in the Eastern District of North Carolina, provided him with invaluable behind-the-scenes insight into how courts operate and how legal decisions are made. This clerkship experience, where he worked hand-in-hand with a federal judge, listening to judicial opinions and writing legal briefs, gave him a unique perspective that would later inform his own service as a military judge.
Military Career
A Distinguished Journey Across Continents and Legal Disciplines
Commissioned into the Army JAG Corps in September 2001, just one week after the September 11th attacks, LTC (R) Treb Courie entered military service during one of the most transformative periods in modern military history. His timing was purely coincidental—his clerkship had ended on August 31, 2001, and his report date of September 18, 2001, had been set a year earlier—but it meant that the Army he joined was fundamentally different from the peacetime force he had expected. This baptism by fire during the early days of the Global War on Terror shaped his understanding of military law in operational environments and the critical importance of legal protections for service members facing unprecedented challenges.
His military career took him across the globe, from his initial assignment in Germany with the First Infantry Division, where he deployed to both Turkey and Iraq, to assignments at Fort Monroe, Charlottesville Virginia, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State, and Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. His service continued at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, before taking him to the paradise assignment of Fort Shafter, Hawaii, and ultimately returning him home to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before his final assignment as military judge at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Throughout these diverse assignments, he gained experience in every aspect of military law, from basic legal assistance to complex operational legal issues in combat zones.
From the Battlefield to the Courtroom
Mastering Military Justice
from Every Perspective
LTC (R) Treb Courie’s transition from operational military lawyer to military judge represents the natural evolution of a legal career dedicated to understanding and perfecting military justice from every conceivable angle. His deployment experience in Iraq as a claims attorney provided him with practical understanding of the legal challenges facing service members in combat environments, while his work at the Government Appellate Division gave him comprehensive oversight of military justice outcomes across the entire Army. This appellate experience was particularly valuable, as he reviewed virtually every court-martial conviction the Army produced during his two-and-a-half-year tenure, giving him insights into both successful prosecution strategies and common defense mistakes.
His culminating role as military judge allowed him to apply decades of accumulated wisdom while presiding over contested trials, ensuring fairness for both the government and accused service members. Throughout his career, Treb consistently observed that service members often lacked adequate representation in the military justice system, frequently finding himself as the only voice presenting the accused’s perspective even when serving as prosecutor. This experience of seeing the imbalance in military justice proceedings from the inside drove his commitment to ensuring that every service member has effective advocacy, regardless of their rank or the nature of the charges they face.
Guiding Philosophy and Principles
To Do Justice and Love Mercy: A Biblical Approach to Military Law
LTC (R) Treb Courie’s legal philosophy is elegantly summarized in his personal motto: “to do justice and to love mercy,” reflecting his belief that effective legal advocacy must balance the pursuit of justice with genuine compassion for those caught in the military justice system. His approach recognizes that while justice may be blind when examining the facts of a case, true advocacy requires empathy—getting to know the person behind the charges and humanizing what justice should look like in each individual situation. This philosophy was forged through decades of observing military justice proceedings where he consistently saw large numbers of people working against individual service members, often with a presumption of guilt based solely on the existence of adverse action.
His commitment to giving service members a voice stems from his repeated observation that soldiers frequently lack adequate representation at crucial moments in military justice proceedings, regardless of their rank or experience level. Whether defending the youngest private or the most senior officers, Treb has witnessed how the military justice system can overwhelm individuals who find themselves facing adverse action without proper advocacy. His approach ensures that every client receives not just legal representation, but genuine advocacy that takes into account their humanity, their service, and their potential for redemption and continued contribution to the military and society.
Awards, Recognitions, and Volunteerism
Distinguished Service Across Two Decades of Military Excellence
Throughout his distinguished 22-year military career, LTC (R) Treb Courie earned numerous awards and recognitions that reflect his exceptional service across multiple continents and diverse legal specialties. His service in combat zones during deployments to Turkey and Iraq with the First Infantry Division earned him combat-related decorations, while his excellence in legal practice brought him recognition as one of the Army’s most capable and versatile Judge Advocates. His assignment as an instructor of military law at the University of South Carolina School of Law represents one of the highest honors available to military lawyers, reflecting both his mastery of military legal principles and his ability to communicate complex legal concepts to the next generation of attorneys.
Beyond his formal military awards, Treb has consistently demonstrated his commitment to mentoring junior officers and improving the military justice system through his volunteer efforts and professional development activities. His work at the Government Appellate Division, where he supervised teams of captains and reviewed hundreds of cases, contributed significantly to maintaining the quality and consistency of military justice outcomes across the Army. His post-military service at the General Services Administration expanded his expertise into emerging areas of law, particularly technology and cybersecurity compliance, positioning him as one of the few military lawyers with deep expertise in both traditional military law and cutting-edge legal challenges facing modern service members.
