Whiteman Air Force Base is named after 2nd Lieutenant George Allison Whiteman. 2nd Lt. Whiteman was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Lt. Whiteman raced to the airfield and attempted to get his aircraft in the air to counter the attacking Japanese. He was shot by two Japanese Zeroes as he attempted to take off, and was killed as his plane burst into flames attempting a belly landing at Bellows Field, Hawaii. Historians believe that Lt. Whiteman was the first aerial U.S. casualty of World War II. Lt. Whiteman was born on October 12, 1919, in Pettis County, Missouri, and attended high school in Sedalia, about 10 miles from the airfield.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the base was activated as Sedalia Glider Base on August 6, 1942. It closed soon thereafter due to the demobilization that followed World War II. In 1951, the base was revived and became part of the Strategic Air Command, and by 1954 it received its first B-47 Stratojet. In December 1955, Sedalia Air Force Base was re-named Whiteman Air Force Base in honor of 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman.
In June 1961, Whiteman Air Force Base was designated as the fourth Minuteman ICBM wing. Massive construction and hardening of the facilities resulted in 15 launch control centers, and the activation of the 351st Strategic Missile Wing. Whiteman Air Force Base housed both the Minuteman I and Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.
In 1987, it was announced that Whiteman Air Force Base would become the home of the B-2 “Stealth” Bomber. It was not until late December 1993 that Whiteman Air Force Base received its first B-2 bomber. In 1995, as a result of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I), the 351st Missile Wing deactivated, ending the 33-year ICBM mission at Whiteman Air Force Base.
Today, Whiteman Air Force Base is the home of the 509th Bomb Wing. The 509th Bomb Wing operates the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. The 509th Bomb Wing is one of only two Bomb Wings that operation the stealth bomber. The stealth bomber is deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base to any location on Earth to deliver its munitions and returns to Whiteman Air Force Base. These locations have included the air campaign over Serbia and Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. Units at Whiteman Air Force Base include:
