Fort Hood’s Beginnings

Fort Hood, strategically located in Killeen, Texas, epitomizes a fortress of military strength and tradition within the United States Army. Originally established in 1942 as Camp Hood, this installation was named in recognition of Confederate General John Bell Hood and initially served as a key training and testing ground for tank destroyers—a critical response to the German blitzkrieg tactics witnessed during World War II. These tank destroyers, designed as mobile anti-tank systems, played a vital role in supporting infantry forces throughout the war.

Fort Hood in WWII and the Cold War

As World War II intensified, Camp Hood rapidly expanded, becoming instrumental in preparing Soldiers for combat, especially for European operations. Post-war, the camp was demobilized but swiftly reactivated during the Korean War, continuing its legacy as a premier training facility. Transitioning into a permanent Army post in 1950, it was renamed Fort Hood, marking a significant phase of growth and establishing itself as one of the largest and most crucial bases in the military landscape. Throughout the Cold War and subsequent conflicts, Fort Hood served as a central training hub for armored and cavalry units, housing several armored divisions, including the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions, which were pivotal in global military operations.

Renaming of Fort Hood

Fort Hood was renamed in 2023 in honor of General Richard E. Cavazos, the first Hispanic four-star general in the U.S. Army. General Richard E. Cavazos was a senior officer in the U.S. Army, born in 1929 in Kingsville, Texas. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, earning the Distinguished Service Cross in each—one of the Army’s highest awards for combat valor. During his career, Cavazos held several key command positions and worked to improve unit performance. He became the first Hispanic four-star general in Army history. Cavazos retired in 1984, leaving a significant legacy in military leadership.

Fort Hood Today

Fort Hood will be renamed again in 2025 in honor of Col. Robert B. Hood, restoring its original name and recognizing his service in World War I. Today, it remains a key site for training armored and cavalry units, with year-round operations supported by its location and large training areas.

The installation supports development and testing of military technology and tactics, particularly in armored warfare. It also hosts joint exercises with other U.S. branches and allied forces to improve coordination. Fort Hood continues to support U.S. defense strategy while contributing to the local economy and community.

Fort Hood Namesake: Col. Robert B. Hood

Fort Hood (formerly Fort Cavazos) is being renamed in 2025 to honor Col. Robert B. Hood for his extraordinary heroism during World War I. Born in Kansas in 1891, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1917 and served in France during the war.

During intense fighting near Thiaucourt, France, then-Captain Hood directed artillery fire while under enfilading machine-gun fire. When his gun crew was lost to enemy fire, he quickly reorganized and returned fire within minutes, restoring combat capability. For his actions, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army’s second-highest military decoration for valor.

Col. Hood continued his military service until retiring in 1961. He died in 1964. The renaming of the installation honors his legacy and restores the original name of one of the Army’s most significant posts.
